  • 1972 Barbara Jordan and Andrew Young are first Southern African Americans elected to House since 1901

Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman to serve in the House of Representatives, wrote:
 
     "When I decided to run for Congress, I knew I would encouter, both anti-black and anti-feminist sentiments. What surprised me was the much greater virulence of sex discrimination."
